Welcome to the fourth season for the Blue Crab Model Yacht Club. The Blue Crab Model Yacht Club was organized in March 2003 to locate and connect model boat sailors. The members comprise a diverse group in terms of sailing experience. We have at least one regular sailor whose sailing experience is nearly all r/c. We have a few former sailors whose past includes sailing and racing, but for whom geography and other factors make owning a real sailboat impractical (and have many years separating them from their experience). Finally, we have a few active sailors with access to boats and facilities for full-scale sailing and racing. None of us is a rabid competitor; we welcome new members just to share the fun—and to increase the odds there will be someone to sail with on any given sunny day.In the fall of 2003 interest emerged in power boats. Perhaps some harbinger of a cold, snowy winter suggested the wisdom of an indoor project, or maybe the occasional day when there was NO wind made powered boating look like a good idea. In any event, several power boats are made an appearance, and since then several more have appeared. Alas, the Commodore's is still on the building table. The 2005 season had the heart cut out of it by a hot, dry summer. When I say dry, I mean really dry. Our pond was drained in June for renovation, and we didn't have it back until October. 2007 was almost as bad, though lots of great sailing continued at the Kentlands in Gaithersburg. If you are interested in joining, it is truly fair to say that none of our members has any expectations of ability, skill, or resources beyond the desire to have fun and a willingness to participate and share ideas. You don’t even have to own a boat. And if you want to get a feel for what it’s like, any of our members would be happy to hand over the controls so you can try it out.Join us any time; on the BCMYC home page you'll usually find a current notice of imminent activity including time and location. | At present our members represent several sailboat classes: mostly the CR-914, but there are a few Victorias, Solings, and a few high-performance sailboats. The CR-914 and Victoria classes are similar, with the Victoria being just a few inches shorter than the 914. While we’re pleased to have any class represented, racing is almost exclusively done with CR-914s. Victorias, Solings and others ware welcome to sail in those races, but prizes will not be available unless those classes grow enough to make class competition possible. Bottom line: Recreational participation is encouraged with any boat you like. |
